Pride and its place

It will be interesting to see how the powers that be spin this turn of events. It was earlier reported that Carmen Conglose was going to be gifted a new traffic coordinator position without any competing interiews. Well, nothing makes for good government like closing the doors to competition. But Conglose has decided to take it personally.

The retired head of the public works department said the civil service commission’s refusal to recommend he be hired to a city job without first considering other potential applicants is a “slap in the face” and an “insult.”
Whatever else it is, the mayor is clearly learning his political lessons. Keeping things open, where Youngstown city government is concerned, is the best approach, and anything else is suspect. The Vindicator's editorial page has called the mayor on the carpet recently for what it considers questionable financial decisions. I hope they'll give him his due on this one. But still, I'd like to know: what exactly does the traffic coordinator do?

Good Question! please share if you get an answer. Also, I'm told that citizens are supposed to be on most of the committees that are set up by city council, yet I have yet to hear about the mechanism used to select those citizens. We need more transparency in government!

I Think The traffic coordinator is responsible for making sure the traffic lights in and out of the city remain set for 1972's traffic patterns. Nothing makes me happier than sitting at the bottom of Poland Ave. at a red light on a Sunday Morning.

You must have been reading my mind. When I first heard Conglose was going to be hired as the traffic coordinator, I e-mailed Mayor Williams. He has done a terrible job in the past. Every light on 5th, Market, South and 422 is set to make sure you hit every light and spend most of your time idling, polluting and wasting gas. This is not the image of a green city I was invisioning. We need someone new who has vision; not the same thing we have had for 30 years. Great job on your blog!

I've never understood the traffic lights on Fifth Avenue, coming north from downtown. I agree, it feels like I hit every single light. I have a better time driving down to Wick and coming up over 422 and back across to Fifth. What the hell?

I can't take it anymore! I think the traffic lights are getting longer. This is a safety issue. How can we get someone to fix the timing on them?
